Atahualpa, in Quechua "the bird of fortune", was the last ruler of the Inca empire (~ 1500-1533). He was born in Quito, the son of a princess of the elder of the Kingdom of Quito and Sapa Inca Huayna Capac.
Francisco Pizarro imprisoned him and demanded a large ransom in exchange for his release. Despite paying the required amount, he was sentenced to death and hanged.
